Denver International (DEN) this afternoon announced that CEO Phil Washington will retire effective August 1, concluding a distinguished career spanning more than five decades of military and public service.
Washington, co-chair of AAAE’s Policy Review Council, was initially nominated as DEN CEO by former Denver Mayor Michael Hancock in July 2021 and most recently by current Mayor Mike Johnston in July 2023. Prior to his arrival at DEN, Washington was the CEO of the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) from March 2015 to May 2021.
“I am honored to have served the public for so many years,” Washington said. “But this was a long-planned decision. I’ve worked in transportation and infrastructure, and we have accomplished so much but my greatest accomplishments have been about building world-class organizations driven by vision, innovation and an unwavering commitment to people.”
“I am deeply proud of the work we have done and know that DEN remains in good hands with a talented team of dedicated professionals,” he added.
During his tenure, Washington established a strategic direction for the airport through Vision 100 and Operation 2045 comprehensive plans designed to guide DEN toward serving 100 million annual passengers and beyond.
“Phil Washington has helped guide DEN through an extraordinary period of growth and opportunity,” Johnston said. “His leadership has had a transformational impact on DEN and the aviation industry, helping position our airport as a global leader in innovation, connectivity and customer experience. Phil’s legacy will be felt for generations, particularly the many lives that have been and will be impacted through the Center of Equity and Excellence in Aviation.”
During his tenure, Washington championed investments in people and workforce development, advanced career pathways, leadership development, small business growth and inclusive workforce initiatives, strengthening DEN’s organizational culture and national reputation.
Under his leadership, DEN executed one of the most ambitious capital improvement programs in its history, including major progress on the Great Hall Program, currently ahead of schedule and under budget.
“I want to thank Mayor Mike Johnston and former Mayor Michael Hancock for allowing me to lead DEN these past five years,” Washington said. “As I step away, I do so knowing that DEN is stronger than ever and I am leaving the airport better than I found it,”
“We dreamed big, acted boldly and delivered meaningful results for our community," he concluded.
