The Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP) is thrilled to highlight the impactful work of the Advisory Committee on Transportation Equity (ACTE), a vital initiative in advancing equity within the transportation sector. Led by the Biden-Harris Administration, ACTE plays a crucial role in shaping transportation policies and strategies to address historical disparities and empower communities across the United States.
Equity stands as a cornerstone of the Biden-Harris Administration's agenda, evident in the Department of Transportation's strategic priorities. The reestablished Committee is dedicated to providing advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Transportation on comprehensive transportation equity issues. ACTE brings together a diverse range of stakeholders, including transportation planners, designers, researchers, policymakers, and advocates, to achieve the Department's equity goals.
ACTE focuses on four key Equity Objectives to drive its mission forward:
Expanding Access: By offering affordable, multi-modal transportation options, ACTE aims to increase social and economic opportunities for historically overburdened and underserved communities. The development of a transportation cost burden measure is also in progress to alleviate financial strain on these communities.
Power of Community: ACTE advocates for greater community involvement in transportation decisions, ensuring that individuals and communities have a voice in matters affecting them directly.
Interventions: To ensure that historically overburdened and underserved communities benefit from national infrastructure investments, ACTE provides hands-on technical support for transportation projects with local impact.
Wealth Creation: By expanding business networks and increasing contracting opportunities with the USDOT, ACTE aims to build capital and new skills for small and disadvantaged businesses, promoting wealth creation within these communities.
ACTE's subcommittees, including Wealth Creation, Expanding Access, Power of Community, and Interventions, are conducting public meetings in the coming weeks to discuss their initial recommendations and refine them further.
