San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has boldly joined forces with transportation agencies across the Bay Area to sign the Equity in Infrastructure Pledge, underscoring its unwavering commitment to driving economic opportunities for Historically Underutilized Businesses (HUBs). This powerful pledge was formalized during a groundbreaking event at the Milpitas Transit Center today, emphasizing the critical mission to reduce the racial wealth gap and create lasting generational wealth by opening doors for HUBs to access major infrastructure projects.
As part of this transformative initiative, SFO has vowed to dramatically expand opportunities for HUBs through enhanced prime, joint venture, and equity contracting prospects. This ambitious approach is designed to empower underrepresented businesses, enabling them to take on pivotal roles and lead high-profile infrastructure projects that have traditionally been out of reach.
The Equity in Infrastructure Project (EIP), co-founded by Phil Washington, CEO of Denver International Airport, and John Porcari, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Transportation, is at the forefront of this revolutionary movement. Established in 2021, the EIP is a dynamic non-profit project of the Social Impact Fund, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. The EIP is strategically aligned with federal, state, and local efforts to turbocharge equity in infrastructure contracting.
The EIP’s powerful mission is to unite a diverse coalition of infrastructure agencies, especially those benefiting from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, to increase HUBs’ participation and influence in the contracting arena. The project’s bold focus is to elevate the role of HUBs by helping them secure coveted prime contractor positions, engage in joint ventures, and become equity stakeholders in transformative infrastructure projects.
